Gage Meller strikes double Bronze fencing sabre at Ontario Winter Games

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 2018

St Catharines, ON. Athletes from across Ontario traveled to Orillia to attend the 2018 Ontario Winter Games. The games were the culmination of a yearlong selection process that saw the best under-15 Ontario fencers competing.

The Ontario Winter Games is the largest multi-sport event in Ontario including both individual and team sports. Provincial athletes under the age of 15 compete to qualify through regional selections to make it to the games. For many athletes this is the high point of their sporting career for many others this is a stepping stone to Canada Games, Pan Am Games or even Olympic Championships. For fencing, this year’s event took place at Orillia Secondary School in Orillia and athletes competed in one of the three Olympic fencing disciplines (foil, epee, sabre).

Gage dominated in the initial round robin competition winning 9 out of 11 bouts. In his final match against Toronto’s Richard Yang, Gage went point for point with the eventual silver medallist finally losing 15-10 but winning the bronze medal in the individual competition. Gage went on to compete in the team relay event, anchoring his team to a final bronze medal as well.

Taking the double bronze is a wonderful achievement to Gage’s season having started fencing less than a year ago at a summer camp at Brock University. Gage trains at the Brock Fencing Academy under coaches Tim Stang, Kristine Richardson and Aaron Olmstead.

Gage’s season continues with his sights on the Canadian National Championships being hosted here in St Catharines in May. There he will compete against some of the top under-15 fencers in the nation.
